I have a tendency to find a new YouTube channel and feverishly ingest all of its content. Recently, that happened with Patrick (H) Willems channel. He is a filmmaker and film critic. He makes short films, video essays, and blurs the lines between the two.
What I love about one of his videos – “We Need To Talk About Film Criticism” – is that he talks about finding new voices – voices we may not agree with – to expand our palette and our understanding of film (but really any subject). I don’t always agree on his takes for different films, but I enjoy the passion and intricate detail he puts into his observations and craft.
I know I need to expand outward more often to find new voices, new ideas, and new ways of looking at the things I so often overlook around me. Do you?
